Top 3 Go-to chaepest Butcheries in Bloemfontein for students on a budget

Being a student in Bloem isn’t easy. Between rent, transport, and trying to have a life, food can easily drain your budget. But what if you knew where to get cheap, quality meat without eating noodles every night?

Here are my top 3 butcheries in Bloem where you can stretch even your NSFAS (💃ingenile) and still braai like a boss.

1. Highveld Butchery—near Lorch Logan WaterFront

📍 Location: 95A Charles St, Bloemfontein Central, 9300

They have pork, beef, and other kinds of hampers ranging from R250 to R1000.

The above location is not yet updated on Google Maps, so if you look it up, it might not say it's Highveld Butchery. it is very new and has not been verified on google maps as a butchery

This is most probably the cheapest out of the 3, according to students who buy from here, who also highly rate the place, with one of the UFS students saying, "The place is super clean, and the prices are unbelievable." 

 Why I rate it: Friendly uncles behind the counter, and I think they source the meat locally, and together with one of the owners, we seem to have a mutual passion for hunting; they even let you mix-and-match on small budgets. I go here when I need meat for the whole month under R600.

2. Watloo meat & chicken, Bloemfonteinntein

This one might be a little controversial, but not because of price. There are some students that I have come across that seem to not like their meat and go as far as shaming others who consume it. The place is very cheap compared to the other butcheries that did not make this list.

 Prices: Are low across many of their products, and they even sell spices and other consumables.

Hustler Tip: If you go after 4PM, they sometimes give extra pieces. The staff are used to students and even recommend recipes if you ask.

3. Carcass and Cleaver

"Fantastic service and prices" is what one of the students said about them. Around March 2025, Carcass & Cleaver blew up on TikTok for affordability, which led to a lot of students going there, and then they increased some of their prices.

📍 Location: 10 Elrich St, Willows, Bloemfontein 9301

 Prices: Used to be very cheap, now just affordable

Buy in groups, cook together, and save big.
